Erlebnisweg Totes Moor
The Erlebnisweg Totes Moor offers a fascinating 7‑kilometre journey through the nature reserve of the same name. Starting either at the Alte Moorhütte car park or at the Großenheidorner Tower, the trail invites exploration across a landscape both mysterious and full of life. Seven interactive stations highlight the region’s unique flora and fauna, reveal centuries of human use of the moorland, and explain how this rare ecosystem is being preserved within the nature park. The route first follows an old peat canal to the Großenheidorner Tower, where a sweeping view over the eastern shore of Lake Steinhude awaits. Here, visitors learn how the lake is slowly silting up and how nature continually adapts. Nearby, at the historic peat pits, nature has reclaimed the once‑busy extraction sites, and information boards tell of the hard life of the peat cutters who once worked here. Further along, a wooden footbridge leads to the Seerosensee, now alive with blue moor frogs where a sand hill stood just decades ago. The trail continues over the Moorsteg, home to the resilient sundew, a carnivorous plant thriving on insects caught by its sticky leaves. Surrounding the path, mosses, pines and blooming heathlands flourish as the landscape renews itself. At the Moorhüttensteg, visitors can discover how different types of moor emerge and why they are vital for climate protection. The nearby observation tower offers stunning vistas over the Steinhuder Meer, where great crested grebes nest – a tranquil conclusion to this immersive journey through one of Lower Saxony’s most captivating natural worlds.
