Kloster Mariensee

Kloster
Founded in 1207 as a Cistercian convent, Kloster Mariensee has preserved its serene atmosphere and spiritual heritage through centuries of change. In its early years, the monastery played an important economic role, producing agricultural goods that were sold in nearby Hanover. Following the Reformation, the convent continued as an evangelical institution, maintaining its religious presence in the region. A devastating fire later destroyed most of the buildings, leaving only the church intact. Reconstruction was carried out under King George II, marking a period of renewal that shaped the monastery’s modern identity. The current architectural appearance bears the influence of a pupil of the renowned master builder Conrad Wilhelm Hase, whose style brought new life to the complex while retaining its historical essence. Today, Kloster Mariensee stands as a tranquil testament to faith, resilience, and architectural beauty. Its peaceful courtyards and harmonious brickwork invite visitors to pause, reflect, and discover a place where history and spirituality meet in timeless balance — a hidden cultural treasure within the Hanover region.
