Verden - Horseman's City

Picture: Silhouette of Verden with grazing horses The historic town at the meeting of the rivers Aller and Weser is best approached from the water – whether by boat or by bike on the Weser cycle route. Your first view of Verden from the riverside, with horses grazing on the meadows by the Aller, gives you a first impression of the town, which was founded more than 1000 years ago.

The cathedral, towering over the town, dominates it visually, and not just from a distance. At its foot, you will find a small town with plenty to discover. In and around Verden, much revolves around horses throughout the year. The world famous Hanoverian horses have often taken there first trots on the earth of our town, before going on to more international pastures. And you definitely shouldn't miss the German horse museum – where you can hear all about it from the horse's mouth!

The cathedral of Verden

Picture: Interior view cathedral of Verden As the loftiest testament to former ages, the cathedral still serves as the symbol of the town of Verden. The current building was preceded by two wooden and two stone churches, and was built over the period 1290 to 1490 on the model of the cathedrals of Reims and Minden. The Gothic vaulted building now has three wings, and is most notable for its simplicity of line and impressive dimensions. The choir surrounding the nave is thought to be the oldest in Germany, and was used as a model for other ecclesiastical buildings. From May to September, the summer concerts held every Thursday attract visitors from near and far to the cathedral.

The German Horse Museum

Situated in the former cavalry barracks at the Holzmarkt, you can trace the origins of the horse and of riding, and the role of the horse through the ages and in different cultures.

Domherrenhaus history museum

Picture: Domherrenhaus history museum Do you want to know more about the history of Verden? You can find out all about it in the Domherrenhaus history museum. The museum is located in a magnificent court building built in 1708, just two minutes walk from the cathedral, and presents collections concerning the historical and folkloristic aspects of Verden's history. Of particular importance are the "Lehringer findings", displayed as part of a stone-age elephant hunt. Or are you looking for that special spot for a wedding? Official wedding ceremonies can also be performed in the Domherrenhaus – a special atmosphere for an unforgettable day!

Boat trip with the 'MS Stadt Verden'

Picture: Boat trip with the MS Stadt Verden Discover Verden from the water on the "MS Stadt Verden“. You can experience the town and the surrounding area from a very different perspective on a tour of the rivers Aller and Weser. You can also hold your own celebration on board the boat - the Verden boat trip team will be happy to organise company parties, school trips, birthday parties, anniversaries, christenings or confirmations in keeping with the slogan "all on board!"
