Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve

Biosphere reserves are large model regions for man-made landscapes, in which environmentally acceptable ways of utilising natural resources are pursued. The Elbe river landscape has been a designated UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1997. The area has a unique natural and man-made landscape for the visitor to discover. Green tourism is a priority in the biosphere reserve. For which reason the best way of exploring the landscape is by bicycle, boat or horse. Hundreds of kilometres of cycle routes follow both banks of the Elbe, sometimes on the embankments, sometimes through idyllic villages and small towns.

Drifting sand dunes, floodplain forests, steep banks, black storks, sea eagles and beavers provide the thrills in the Elbe river landscape. The biggest experience is the quiet and the limitless, largely untouched countryside. The land along the Elbe is an important breeding and resting area for migratory birds on their journey to Africa and the far North. Primeval floodplain forest is interspersed with fertile marshland. Pools and ancient courses of the Elbe are filled with water right through to the summer months, because the landscape along the Elbe is shaped by the encroachment of the untamed waters far inland during the winter months.
