UNESCO World Heritage in Hildesheim

Picture: UNESCO World Heritage: church St.Michael in Hildesheim Like no other city in Niedersachsen, Hildesheim has got its good national as well as international reputation thanks to its culture. In 1985, Hildesheim had already two monuments incl. their art treasures added to the list of world heritage sites by UNESCO: St. Michael, one of the most beautiful early Romanesque churches in Germany, and the cathedral with its impressive bronze casts. Both monuments are excellent examples of Romanesque architecture.

Picture: 1000-year-old rose tree at the cathedral in Hildesheim A particularly beautiful natural monument entwines the cathedral: the 1000-year-old rose tree – shrouded in legend. It is responsible for the city’s byname “rose city”. The Knochenhauer-Amtshaus (the office building of the Knochenhauer) in the heart of the city was built in 1529. Its gable reaches an impressive height of 26 meter. It was not only a sign of civic power and wealth at the time, but is also considered an artistic masterpiece of the late Gothic period. It is generally accepted to be the “most beautiful timbered house in the world”.

1,000 years St. Michaelis UNESCO World Cultural Heritage

1,000 years have passed since the laying of the cornerstone of the Michaeliskirche - reason enough to celebrate the special anniversary of the UNESCO-World Heritage Site extensively. Light installations, art exhibitions, a mystery play, a tango night inside the cloister of the adjoining Michaeliskloster conference centre and special activities such as the replica of a medieval site hut make up the diverse programme of the millennium celebration of the church.
