Boldly jolting their way across the picturesque landscape, driven by steam or horse power, the historic railways of Niedersachsen cut across tidal flats, heath or hills. A nostalgic way to travel, as if time had stood still.

A world away from the business of modern high-speed trains, these railways offer you the chance to rediscover slowness. A meander by rail through Niedersachsen has plenty of beautiful sites to offer. The guards wear red caps, dark blue uniforms and keep their change in leather bags. Outside, signal boxes raise their signals warning travellers of the steam stallion, whose whistle signals "Look out, I'm coming!"

As well as the normal travel programme, the railways also offers some special gourmet trips - depending on the season, you can book the Maischollen young plaice ride, the potato express or the asparagus tour.
