Between 1830 and 1974 more than 7 million people emigrated overseas via Bremerhaven. Today, the Deutsches Auswandererhaus (the German Emigration Center), located at the historical old/ new harbour - the Alter/Neuer Hafen – is Europe's biggest experimental museum on the subject of emigration.
The exhibition of the DEUTSCHES AUSWANDERERHAUSES gives visitors first-hand experiences of what it meant to emigrate. All the different stations of an emigration process have been intricately staged and can be explored interactively. Selected emigration biographies accompany the exhibition and illustrate motives, conditions as well as effects of an emigration. The Forum Migration shows current aspects of global migration and invites visitors to go on a personal quest for their emigrated ancestors and to investigate the origin of one’s own name.
The Deutsches Auswandererhaus combines knowledge and excitement, relaxation and enjoyment. The extensive services also include Kids World, offering little ones their very own experience around the subject of emigration. The exquisite cuisine of the restaurant indulges visitors with delicacies from the Old and the New World.
