Farmyard Cafés

Picture: Horse-drawn carriage in front of half-timbered farmhouse Niedersachsen's farmyards have long been a byword for hospitality. And this is nowhere more evident than in the service in its numerous super-friendly farmyard cafés. It's a welcome extra source of income for the farmers, because it's not easy to make a living from agriculture alone these days, and visitors can enjoy regional specialities in a rustic setting.

It doesn't get much cosier and more relaxed than in an old farm building or a shady farmyard garden. Good food in pleasant surroundings isn't, however, all that the farmyard cafés have to offer. Many are situated in charming country settings, and on cycle routes or footpaths. So you'll find farmyard cafés in East Friesian Gulfhouses or in half-timbered barns. You'll meet dairy farmers and potato farmers, speaking the Low German local dialect or standard High German. Meaning you get to experience the local language and lifestyle at first hand.
